Barclaycard offers student debt advice

Students taking on debt at the start of the new academic term may benefit from a new guide to borrowing responsibly published by Barclaycard.

According to Amer Sajed, managing director of UK cards at Barclaycard, credit cards can often be a useful tool for students to help them manage a tight budget.

However, he added that is essential that all credit card holders ensure they learn to manage their borrowing and to "make the most of the benefits and avoid the pitfalls of using credit cards".

According to price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, the average cost of student life is around £34,000 over a three-year degree.

The site suggested that students heading to university for the first time this autumn may be eligible to cover their possessions under their parents' home contents insurance policy.

In addition, students may wish to leave their car at home, as on-street city parking could increase premiums by up to £1,300 when compared to parking in the driveway of a suburban home.ADNFCR-323-ID-18751503-ADNFCR
