Vodafone price rise is "blatant dishonesty"

A consumer group has accused mobile phone provider Vodafone of "blatant dishonesty" over its latest price rise.

The National Consumer Council (NCC) slammed the network provider for refusing to allow customers to terminate their contracts in the light of the price hike.

Customers whose bills were set to rise by more than ten per cent had the legal right to leave their contracts for free.

But Vodafone rejected this and demanded charges of up to £500.

Telecommunications watchdog Ofcom has launched an inquiry.

Anna Fielder, senior policy adviser at the NCC, said: "It is blatant dishonesty."

She accused Vodafone of "not being transparent".

Meanwhile, switching to a SIM-only tariff could help cut your mobile phone costs, according to the Independent.

The newspaper reported that such deals, in which consumers provide their own handsets, are "relatively cheap" for networks to provide.

It cited research from consumer magazine Which? which showed that switching to a SIM-only contract could save up to £180 a year.
