Price 'biggest deciding factor in car purchases'

The cost of a car is the biggest issue for people making a vehicle-purchasing decision, new research has found.

A survey by the British Car Auctions (BCA), reported by Which? magazine, found that price trumped model, mileage and age for buyers' concerns.

Of those polled, 22 per cent said they would seek a model with lower maintenance and fuel costs.

And nine per cent said they would go for a make which was cheaper to insure, while another nine per cent said they would simply choose a cheaper car.

Professor Peter Cooke, author of the report, said that the economic slowdown could prompt people to buy smaller cars or quality second-hand ones instead of new models.

According to the AA, drivers pay approximately £30 to £50 more on their car insurance to protect others against motorists without cover.

Andrew Howard, head of road safety, explained that insurance premiums fund a panel to protect people suffering injury or damage from uninsured drivers.
