Government gives car cost-cutting tips

Tips are being given by the government to help motorists and car insurance customers save money.

It is spending £3 million on a campaign to help drivers run their cars more economically.

One of the moves is to include information in the practical driving test on how to drive at less expense.

Radio stations have already broadcast a number of tips and advice, while a television campaign is set to begin next year.

Tips include pumping tyres properly and changing gear early.

Jim Fitzpatrick, transport minister, said that the suggestions offered could save the cost of a month's worth of fuel each year.

"Common sense changes can make for major improvements," he said.

Suffolk police have been forced to reduce their use of vehicles to save money due to high fuel costs.

The East Anglian Daily Times reported that the force has cut tens of thousands of miles from its bill.

But chief officers warn that there will still be a £310,000 overspend, which will rise to £370,000 including helicopter fuel.
