BIBA: Car insurance 'could be reduced'

The £30 levy on car insurance policies to cover uninsured drivers could be reduced, the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has said.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at BIBA, said that if new measures to combat drivers without cover made a "dent", then the levy would theoretically decline.

But he noted that uninsured drivers pose a "massive problem".

Mr Trudgill explained that there is "potential" for the levy to go down, but said that the claims inflation is eight per cent due to increasing claims and personal injury costs.

According to Mr Trudgill, about six per cent of drivers are uninsured, while in Germany the figure is closer to 0.1 per cent.

Direct Line Car Insurance has said that accidents involving drivers without cover kill around 200 road users a year.

Uninsured drivers are also ten times more likely to have a drink-driving conviction and six times more likely to be driving an unsafe vehicle.
