Banks 'need to lend responsibly'

The importance of responsible lending in the current climate has been stressed by a business writer.

Giles Gibbons, founder and chief executive of Good Business, wrote in Ethical Corporation magazine that corporate responsibility in terms of lending was "right up at the top" of issues that pose a risk to business.

Mr Gibbons added that figures in a recent survey by Good Business found that objective financial advice was the single most attractive feature that banks and building societies could give to consumers.

A majority of consumers (77 per cent) said banks should play a role in tackling social issues such as society debt before taking action about the environment.

Mr Gibbons wrote that as the economy slows, over the long-term, corporate responsibility will have to be carried out properly.

In related news a survey by the National Association of Pension Funds found that 91 per cent of UK companies believe offering a pension scheme helps their reputation as a responsible employer.

And 89 per cent feel that it is a duty to help staff prepare for retirement.
