Advice offered to protect against identity theft

A list of tips to help prevent fraudsters stealing personal details has been published by the Times.

All unwanted documents containing names and addresses should be destroyed, preferably shredded.

In addition, bank and card statements ought to be carefully checked when they arrive for unauthorised transactions.

People are also advised to use different passwords for each account and never to use banking passwords for other websites.

If your cards are lost or stolen, cancel them immediately.

Personal details must never be given to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.

If it happens, take their phone number, check it is genuine and then call back.

Bear in mind that a bank will never ask for your PIN, password or a whole security number.

Recently, The Engineer magazine reported a new foil envelope that could help stop credit cards and passports being cloned during transit.

The IdlokR envelope, from BioCert iQBio Metrics, costs the same as a postage stamp.
