Wedding insurance 'is sensible'

The importance of wedding insurance has been stressed by two bridal magazines.

You and Your Wedding and Cosmopolitan Bride urged couples planning their nuptials to take out appropriate cover.

Matt Salmon, group publishing director for both magazines, said that if a function is costing £15,000 to £20,000 then insuring it is "a fairly sensible thing" to do.

He said brides should insure against disasters such as the venue having a fire, although he noted that anything being paid for by credit card would have "a certain amount of insurance".

According to a survey by You and Your Wedding, the average wedding now costs £20,273.

Entertainment is the biggest expense, with the second highest cost being the honeymoon.

And the average man spends £1,412 on his beloved's engagement ring.

Research by Confetti.co.uk has found that 80 to 85 per cent of couples do not insure their wedding properly.

Wedding insurers Ecclesiastical said damage to the wedding dress, jewellery or other items of clothing is the biggest cause for a claim.

The second biggest claim is for cancellation of the wedding.
