World Food Programme: High energy costs contribute to increased food prices

The rising cost of energy is a main reason for increases in food prices, the World Food Programme has said.

Spokesperson Caroline Hurford said the food costs are "rooted" in the price of energy, increasing demand from economic growth in developing economies and the growth of biofuels.

She also said that "climactic shocks" such as droughts and floods played a part as well as a lack of investment in agriculture.

In addition, Ms Hurford said that food reserves are at a 25-year low and the markets are "extremely volatile".

The weakening dollar is also partly to blame, she added.

Overall, Ms Hurford said there is a "complex set of causes" for the food price rises.

According to Bread for the World, more than 862 million people across the globe are forced to go hungry.

It also says that nearly 16 million children die every year from preventable and treatable causes in developing countries, mostly from hunger and malnutrition (60 per cent).
