Extensions 'can increase a home's value'

Most members of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) believe adding an extension can improve a home's value.

A recent survey found 92 per cent of members to be in agreement on the issue.

But when asked to choose the best way to add to a house price, 41 per cent of agents believed an extension was the most favourable option, while 17 per cent suggested a new kitchen.

Upgrading the exterior was found to be the least popular choice, with just four per cent opting for it.

Peter Bolton Kind, chief executive of NAEA, warned that sellers should bear in mind the average price of properties in the area.

Earlier this month, the NAEA welcomed the government's plan to abolish stamp duty for a year for homes under £175,000, but said more action was required.

Mr Bolton King said he did not believe the decision would affect the entire market.
