AA: Car sharing will become a trend

The high cost of petrol will prompt Britain into a trend of car sharing, the AA has predicted.

According to research by AA Insurance, nearly half (47 per cent) of the population is now considering it, although only 11 per cent currently do it more than once a week.

Of the 5.5 million who share cars now, 60 per cent say cost cutting is the main reason, while 34 per cent are most concerned about carbon emissions.

AA Insurance noted that 73 per cent of car sharers do not check their cover before going on a shared trip and warned that some business travel may need separate insurance.

Ian Crowder of AA Insurance said that 14 per cent of people car share to get to business meetings, which may require a policy upgrade to "business use".

The Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) recently said it was "not surprised" that inner cities had especially high numbers of uninsured drivers.

Spokeswoman Lorraine Preston said there was a greater concentration of automobiles in such areas, adding that driving uninsured carries "major unacceptable costs".
