Car insurance beginner's guide offered

A "beginner's guide" to car insurance has been published by the Independent.

The newspaper advised readers on how to shop for cover, what sort of policy to buy and how to lower the costs.

Comparison websites were described as a "great tool" for seeking a good deal but drivers were also told to shop around, as no site is completely exhaustive.

The benefits of fully comprehensive insurance were made clear by the newspaper but it also pointed out that the extra expense may not be worthwhile if a car is old.

In those cases, the minimum legal requirement of third party might be best, although newer and more expensive cars should be comprehensively insured.

The guide also suggested drivers under 25 consider pay-as-you-go insurance schemes which help to lower premiums by assessing driving habits, or to pay annually rather than monthly.

Recently, the Motor Insurers' Bureau declared its determination to change the perceptions of uninsured drivers.

Spokesperson Lorraine Preston said some people do not appreciate the enormity of the crime of driving uninsured.
