Apacs: £11.9 billion spent in DIY stores on cards

A total of £11.87 billion was spent in DIY stores on credit and debit cards between August 2007 and July 2008, according to newly released figures.

Apacs, the UK payments association, said there were more than four million transactions on cards in DIY shops every week.

May was the biggest month for expenditure, with over £1.15 billion spent on plastic cards in over 22.8 million transactions.

Altogether, there were approximately 229 million transactions over the entire period, an average of over 4.4 million a week with the average price paid being £51.87.

Debit cards accounted for £6.57 billion and 152.4 million transactions, compared to credit cards, which were used in 76.5 million transactions to spend £5.3 billion.

Figures released earlier this month by the Cheque and Credit Clearing Company showed that five million cheques are still processed on the average clearing day.

The most common value was £50 (over 120,000 items) but 57 were worth one penny and another 57 were worth over £1 million.
