Moneysupermarket warning issued about travel insurance

Only four insurers cover scheduled airline failure as standard, comparison website moneysupermarket.com has found.

The research was conducted in the wake of the demise of Zoom and XL.

Moneysupermarket warned travellers not to risk being caught short in the future.

It found that Swiftcover offers scheduled airline cover as an add-on at a cost of £1.

Ryanair also offers it for an extra £1, while easyJet carries it as standard, when a customer buys insurance alongside the flight.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, said the findings were "surprising" and warned travellers not to assume they would be protected.

After XL, the UK's third biggest holiday company, collapsed, moneysupermarket.com noted that the 50,000 Britons who had bought package holidays would be protected under the Air Travel Organisers Licensing (ATOL) licence.

But those 25,000 who bought flights only were urged to contact the Civil Aviation Authority to make arrangements to get home.
