Britons 'losing up to £10 billion a year in uninsured gardens'

Britons could be losing as much as £10 billion a year for not insuring their gardens properly, according to new research.

A poll by comparethemarket.com found that while 1.2 million households in the UK have suffered garden thefts, over a quarter do not cover their barbecues, garden furniture or plants in their home insurance.

Furthermore, 616,000 households have been the victims of vandalism while nearly 2 million say storms and flooding have damaged their gardens in the past year.

Jeremy Moll, insurance expert for comparethemarket.com, stressed that gardens should be properly covered even as people try to save money in the current climate.

"Spending a little on extra cover can save you a lot in the long run," he said.

Recent research by Apacs, the UK payments association, found that Britons spent £11.9 billion on plastic cards in DIY stores over the past year.

There were nearly 229 million transactions, an average of 4.4 million a week, with an average spend of £51.87.
