Experian: Customers more likely to bargain over cars

More than half of British adults (57 per cent) are more prepared to bargain over prices than they were a year ago.

This is according to research by Experian's CreditExpert.co.uk.

The study found that a car is the object people have been most successful in bartering over, with 38 per cent managing it.

Kirk Fletcher, managing director of Experian's automotive division, said that the rising costs of living and running a car were prompting consumers to haggle harder with dealers.

He said that people were spending more time doing internet research before entering a showroom and so are better prepared than ever to secure a good deal.

The research supports earlier data gathered by Sainsbury's, which found that 60 per cent of people planning to buy a new car by February intend to haggle "hard" or "very hard".

Steven Baillie, head of Sainsbury's loans, said that the current economic climate meant fewer people are buying and so it is "one of the best times" to negotiate.
