Fuel poverty "part of everyday British life"

Fuel poverty has become "part of everyday British life", it has been stated.
Speaking after a government report on fuel poverty, Ann Robinson of comparison and switching site uSwitch.com made the claim.
She said pensioners, single income households and families "face a real threat to their standard of living as fuel poverty becomes part of everyday British life".
According to uSwitch.com calculations using government data and accounting for recent price hikes, 5.4 million households are in fuel poverty.
The report, from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, found that the increase was due to rises in consumer energy prices.
Overall, energy costs for domestic consumers rose by 22 per cent from 2005 to 2006, with gas increasing by 29 per cent and electricity by 19 per cent.
There were approximately 3.5 million households in fuel poverty in 2006, one million more than in the previous year.
Environment secretary Hilary Benn said the number of calls to the Act on CO2 helpline, to advise people about energy efficiency, had increased threefold to 57,000 in the fortnight since the awareness campaign had been launched.
