The price comparison site explained how to reduce the risk of having to make an insurance claim as the weather gets colder.
It advised people to run safety checks on such devices as electric fires, blankets and blow heaters, since they will not have been used for a long time.
Cracked fuses, dust and frayed leads should all be checked for and items should not be left on for prolonged periods of time.
Boilers that have not been used for months should be serviced as extremes of hot and cold can cause malfunction or explosion.
Fireguards should also be put in front of log fires and chimneys properly cleaned.
Earlier this month, Confused.com reported that Britons are losing as much as £1.4 billion a year through not researching their home insurance options properly.
Too many simply accept their provider's renewal quote or do not bother to shop around.
