Bupa: Britons fear for health and employment in credit crunch

The economic downturn is having a negative effect on Britons' states of mind concerning jobs and health.

This is according to new research released by health insurance and services provider BUPA.

Its 2008 Healthy Cities Survey, which polled 1,114 people in ten cities, found that most people are concerned about their finances and over a third fear for their jobs.

Approximately 90 per cent expect the financial slowdown to increase stress and worry and four in five fear it could induce stress-related ailments such as depression.

More than two-fifths say they are more stressed at work since the economy began to decline and nearly a quarter are working longer hours to try to keep their jobs.

Dr Rebecca Small, assistant medical director for Bupa UK Health Insurance, said employers have a responsibility for spotting stress in employees at an early stage.

And Dr Paula Franklin, deputy medical director, noted: "The credit crunch is just as much about a person's health as it is their wealth."
