Bristol car club beats cost of motoring

Membership of a car club in Bristol is soaring as drivers increasingly turn to it to cut costs.

The City Car Club has grown by 81 per cent this year, the Bristol Evening Post reports.

At the starts of 2008 it had 559 members and now it has 1,014, with more than 100 new people signing up every month.

The increase has coincided with the city's biggest fall in car sales since 1966.

One member, Pete Brearley, said he pays the annual £75 joining fee and no tax, car insurance, MOT or repair costs.

James Finlayson, head of the club, said joining the group was "cheaper, less hassle and (more) environmentally friendly" than owning a vehicle.

Last month, Sainsbury's Bank found that the cost of motoring has increased by 13.55 per cent since last year to hit £2,543.85 annually.

The cost of fuel was found to be the biggest factor in the increase, but tax and car servicing have also seen significant rises.
