Sainsbury's and Saga Home Insurance: Stay insured for Halloween

Britons have been warned by Saga Home Insurance to ensure they are properly covered before the trick or treaters come calling.

Research by the insurer has found that one in seven people have had to pay for damage caused by tricksters on the night, with the average amount being £117.

Last October, Saga paid out more than £100,000 in claims for malicious damage.

Egg throwing is the most common trick, which has been suffered by 15 per cent of people.

Andrew Goodsell, Saga chief executive, urged people to check their home insurance covers them in the case of vandalism.

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has echoed the call, warning that children's parties cause around £46,000 of damage collectively every night of the year.

It warned that as Halloween is overtaking Bonfire Night in popularity and falls on a Friday this year, the results could be expensive.

The insurer also noted that homeowners might not be fully covered if their children throw parties that were advertised on social networking websites such as Facebook and that policies should be checked.
