Zurich: Boat owners at risk with red diesel price hikes

From November 1st, all private owners of recreational boats will be charged the highest rate of fuel duty for red diesel, Zurich explains.
This means an increase from approximately 76 pence per litre to £1.50.
James Roberts, head of insurance company Navigators & General, said that while boat owners have long had a problem with diesel theft, the sharp increases in costs are likely to exacerbate the issue.
A particular danger he noted is when boat owners go out thinking they are well fuelled, only to run out because their tanks have been siphoned.
Fuel thefts are also not covered by most marine insurance policies.
Mr Roberts encouraged boat owners to buy anti-siphon products developed for marine use.
Earlier this month, Zurich reported that nearly half of Britons (44 per cent) who took part in a poll it carried out did not know what their insurance would cover if they were struck by a flood.
In addition, 40 per cent did not know where to go to get information about flood risk.
