RIAS: Car insurance advice on keeping your no claims bonus

Ways to maintain a no claims bonus have been given by insurance provider RIAS.

The insurer, which specialises in policies for the over 50s, explained that having such a bonus could reduce a policy by as much as 75 per cent.

Drivers were told to weigh up the cost of paying for repairs themselves against the cost of losing their no claims bonus.

RIAS explained that some policies enable drivers to pay a little extra to protect the bonus, although if two claims are made in a short time, this may invalidate the discount and make it difficult to obtain again.

Drivers were also reminded that it is no claims rather than no fault, so it may be at risk if the insurer cannot claim all the money from another person's policy, regardless of who was responsible.

In addition, the importance of safe driving was stressed, through vehicle maintenance, not drink-driving and not being distracted while behind the wheel.

Last month, RIAS expressed support for a campaign by Tyresafe to keep tyres properly inflated and to check their tread depth regularly.

It also told drivers to make sure all engine fluids are topped up as the weather gets colder.
