Moneysupermarket: Causing an accident can hike car insurance by over 60%

Drivers who have an at-fault accident could have their car insurance premiums increased by more than 60 per cent.

This is according to research by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com.

It studied 10 million quotes from users, looking at the effects of having made an at-fault claim on car insurance.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, said: "When an insurer risk assesses a driver, any history of accidents will no doubt mean motorists pay more."

The research also found that bus conductors and GPs were the professions most likely to have a crash, but fewer than 1.5 per cent of driving examiners were responsible for an accident.

Magistrates and au pairs were also found to be low risk.

Last week, moneysupermarket.com reminded people to make sure that their home insurance includes personal liability cover ahead of Bonfire Night.

It also advised people to check that their pets are adequately covered.
