Bupa: UK suffers from poor personal health

Research by the health insurer Bupa has revealed that a significant proportion of the UK's working population is overweight, eats badly and suffers from high levels of stress, all of which can add to the cost of health insurance premiums.

Of those surveyed in the UK's ten biggest cities, more than 40 per cent said they were overweight and only one third do moderate exercise, like walking, every day.

The survey also showed that many respondents didn't eat properly and that stress levels were on the rise, with two fifths of people saying they worried about the credit crunch.

However worrying about the credit crunch may eventually cost Brits more as increased levels of stress along with poor nutrition and lack of exercise increase the likelihood of having a heart attack, which in turn may push up health insurance premiums.

Bupa emphasised the role that employers must play in keeping their work force healthy and choosing the right insurers.

Speaking last month Dr Rebecca Small, assistant medical director at Bupa, said: "Choosing the right provider, who can offer a broad range of health at work services and the expertise to tailor these services to a company's needs, is critical."
