Sainsbury's Home Insurance finds more people cycling

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has published research today which reveals that increasing numbers of Brits are cycling to work instead of driving or taking public transport, in order to save money.

According to the survey, conducted by Sainsbury's Home Insurance, 12 per cent of the UK's workforce - roughly 3.3 million people - has recently taken up cycling to work.

Sainsbury's found that the new cycling enthusiasts were saving themselves an average of £33.70 per week.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said: "Using a bicycle to travel around can be a very effective way of saving money."

But he warned that "thousand of bicycles are stolen in the UK every week" and advised cyclists to ensure their bike is securely locked when leaving it.

Earlier this year the leader of the opposition David Cameron, who is frequently pictured riding a bicycle, had his bike stolen outside a Tesco's store in London.
