ABI: Uninsured drivers have fewer places to hide

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has announced that "More is now being done than ever before" to catch motorists who do not have car insurance.

With the police increasingly using automatic number plate recognition technology that can work out whether someone is insured in minutes, uninsured drivers are left with fewer places to hide, a spokesman from the ABI said.

The ABI's Malcolm Tarling said: "There is none of this having to produce your insurance certificate within seven days, you can tell from the computer screen if you have got cover or not at the roadside."

He also said the insurance industry was working very closely with the police in targeting drivers who did not have car insurance and the database of drivers' insurance details, that was set up a few years ago, was working effectively.

The Department for Transport recently published statistics that showed that the number of drivers committing a serious offence such as driving without insurance had fallen to 3.4 per cent, down from 7.5 per cent in 2006.
