Government's tougher driving laws 'a good thing'

Moneysupermarket.com has said that the recent government proposals to toughen the speeding and drug-driving laws "can only be a good thing" if they help to cut down on dangerous driving.

The price comparison site said: "Those who commit driving offences don't think about the implications of their actions, not only could they harm someone else, but if they are caught it could have a big impact on their insurance costs."

Moneysupermarket.com's research has shown that two speeding convictions send premiums up by an average of 16 per cent and a driving ban for just six months can push premiums up by 50 per cent.

Some insurers could refuse to insure a driver at all after a driving ban.

Yesterday, confused.com counseled drivers to take special care during the winter months as premiums could be pushed up further due to the higher incidence of accidents in inclement conditions.
