Fool.co.uk: Energy bills confuse customers

The results of a survey published by Fool.co.uk have revealed that many Brits do not understand their energy bills and may be paying over the odds as a result.

According to the study five per cent of people do not understand their bills at all and 56 per cent have only a rough understanding of what their quarterly invoice means.

The study also showed that consumers were confused about the cost of everyday actions - many thought it cost 7p to boil a kettle, when in fact the true cost is nearer 1p.

David Kuo, head of personal finance at Fool.co.uk, said that looking carefully at quarterly gas and electricity bills is an important step for those who want to save money.

He also said it was important to work out how much domestic appliances cost to run, adding: "It's pointless skimping on a cup of tea but brushing your teeth in the shower. That's tantamount to taking the seeds from a melon and throwing away the fruit."

Last week Ed Miliband, the energy and climate change secretary, met with the heads of the 'big-six' UK energy suppliers to impress upon them the need to cut the energy costs for households.
