Age Concern: PBR will still leave pensioners out in the cold

Age Concern has criticised the government's pre-Budget report (PBR) proposals, saying they do not go far enough towards helping the UK's oldest and poorest.

The charity said that while the cut in VAT from 17.5 per cent to 15 per cent was welcome, it would not help pensioners very much because the bulk of their income is spent on food and energy bills which will remain unaffected.

According to Age Concern, the £60 one-off payment to pensioners was also not enough as millions of pensioners are still missing out on benefits they are entitled to.

The charity cautiously welcomed the government's commitment to the Warm Front initiative, which aims to improve household's energy efficiency.

Age Concern said: "Increased funding for Warm Front is very welcome as is the clear commitment to tackle unfair pricing policies which mean poorer customers pay more."

However the charity added that again the measures did not go far enough, saying that a "radical new fuel poverty strategy" was needed.

Meanwhile, pension funds like LV= have welcomed the proposals aimed at pensioners in the PBR.
