LITRG welcomes government's focus on low-income households

The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LIRTG) has welcomed the measures announced by the chancellor in Monday's pre-Budget report (PBR), saying they will help to ease the financial burden on the poorer people the UK.

LIRTG described Alistair Darling's measures as "bold moves" and said that the changes to the child benefit, tax credits and pension credit regimes foreshadowed by the chancellor would benefit low income households.

However, the LIRTG said that while the cut in the standard rate of VAT from 17.5 per cent to 15 per cent was welcome, the poorest households may not necessarily benefit.

The group said: "The more a person spends, the more they benefit from the fall in the standard rate. Those whose highest proportionate spend is on food or children's clothing […] may not benefit."

Yesterday Age Concern expressed similar worries over the measures included in the PBR.

The charity said the reforms were welcome, but did not go far enough towards helping the poorest pensioners.
