OFT publishes laws for businesses

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has published a guide to some of the legal changes in the last year that may affect businesses, so that they can deal with consumers fairly and legally.

According to the OFT the guide includes the new rules for adverts and a list of the misleading business practices that are now banned under consumer protection regulations.

Ali Nikpay, the OFT's senior director of policy, said: "There have been a number of changes to legislation this year that affect how businesses operate in the UK. An important part of our role is to provide guidance."

The new guide also contains details of the changes in the laws on the lending and credit industries.

Earlier this week credit card companies were warned not to charge unfair amounts of interest by Peter Mandelson, the business secretary.

Lord Mandelson said he would not hesitate to set the Office of Fair Trading on them if they behaved irresponsibly.
