Tesco Personal Finance warns of ID fraud

Tesco Personal Finance has warned people in the UK to be careful of identity fraud after a survey revealed that many were happy to post key personal details on social networking sites.

While the survey revealed that 65 per cent of social networking site users are worried about having their identity stolen, 57 per cent are happy to publish their date of birth on their social networking pages.

The survey, conducted by Tesco Identity Protection Alert, also showed that nearly 30 per cent of Brits had accepted friend requests from someone they did not actually know.

Security expert Michael Lynch from CPP said: "The information that people are displaying on social networking sites is the very information that financial services organisations often request to verify identity. In the wrong hands, the information could easily be abused."

The Australian government announced earlier today that it would introduce new laws to crack down on identity fraud committed by criminals using social networking sites such as Facebook.
