Citizens Advice: Be careful when taking loans at Christmas

Citizens Advice has issued a warning to shoppers to be careful if they decide to take out a loan out to cover Christmas expenses.

According to the advisory body this year has already seen a 35 per cent increase in the numbers of people having problems paying off their loans and mortgages and the post-Christmas period is likely to see a further surge.

Citizens Advice warned customers to read the small print on any loan agreements carefully and to try not to shop on the overdraft too much.

John Rhodes, head of financial capability at Citizens Advice, said: "It's all too easy to overspend - there are tempting offers and pressures to buy, but you must decide how much you can afford before you start spending."

Last week the government unveiled a 2.5 per cent cut in VAT, a move designed to make Christmas shopping more affordable.
