AXA: Average standard of living costs £1.5bn

AXA has released the results of a survey which show that the cost of maintaining a comfortable lifestyle will cost an average 25-year-old more than £1.5 billion over the course of their lives.

The pensions provider surveyed more than 2,100 people and found that the median average annual salary is £24,908 but the average person spends £28,255.41 per year on general living costs, suggesting that many people may be in debt at the end of their working lives.

AXA claims that people can make significant savings by taking the time to work out how much their spending habits will cost and budget properly.

Steve Folkard, head of savings and pension policy at AXA, said: "According to Oscar Wilde, a cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. We say know the price of everything and the value of planning."

A recent study by Just Retirement revealed that nearly a quarter of the population approaching retirement age are in debt.
