Halifax: Brits give useless gadgets for Christmas

Halifax have released the results of a survey which show that Brits spend an average of £120 each on gadgets as Christmas presents which are unlikely to ever be used by the recipient.

According to the bank, a quarter of Brits buy 'techy' presents knowing full well that they are too technically complex to ever be used and 15 per cent of Brits admit to having been given a gadget they will never use as a present.

It appears that men suffer more from the good intentions of gadget-givers than women, with 18 per cent of men admitting they've received a present they couldn't figure out, compared to just 14 per cent of women.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Our research highlights that a significant amount of money is being wasted on techy gifts that are left to gather dust - money which could perhaps be better spent elsewhere."

Recent research by HSBC revealed that the total amount UK shoppers will spend on Christmas this year is unlikely to decrease from 2007, despite the credit crunch.
