AEGON Scottish Equitable announces new IHT website launch

Customers struggling to understand inheritance tax (IHT) will have a new website dedicated to helping them make informed decisions, thanks to AEGON Scottish Equitable.

The pensions provider claims that a total of £3.8 billion in IHT will be paid to the government by the end of this year and cites research by unbiased.co.uk which claims that last year the taxman took £1.9 billion in IHT unnecessarily.

IHT is charged at a rate of 40 per cent on all assets over the 'nil rate band' of £312,000.

Margaret Jago, technical manager for AEGON Scottish Equitable International, said: "With house prices predicted to drop by anything between 15 per cent and 20 per cent by the end of the year, many people may be fooled into false security that their estates will be outside the current nil rate band."

Recently, the chancellor announced that he would raise the amount of tax paid by those who earn over £150,000 a year.
