FairFX: Changing money at regional airports is expensive

Currency exchange providers FairFX have issued a warning to people in the UK wishing to travel to Europe not to change their money at regional airports.

As currency speculators pushed the pound to a low against the euro this week, FairFX has found that regional airports' currency exchanges are taking advantage of customers who leave their currency-buying until the last minute.

FairFX found that customers changing £200 pounds at Birmingham Airport were given 199 euros, a rate of less than one euro a pound.

Stephen Heath, chief executive of FairFX, described the rate as "dire" and said that those at Luton and Liverpool were not much better.

He added: "This is because regional airports have long taken advantage of travellers who leave buying their holiday cash until they reach the airport by offering far worse rates than outside the terminal."

According to the Guardian, the pound reached a low of 1.1385 against the euro yesterday.
