Citizens Advice: More people seeking help with unemployment

Citizens Advice has recorded a significant increase in the numbers of people asking for help on matters related to redundancy, which suggests that this may be a growing problem.

According to statistics released by the organisation today, since April this year there has been a 125 per cent increase in the number of redundancy-related enquiries.

There has also been a 66 per cent increase in the numbers looking for guidance about the job seekers allowance.

David Harker, chief executive of Citizens Advice, said: "Rarely a day goes by without reports of yet another company announcing job cuts. In this current climate it's imperative to know your rights."

Recent research by MoneyExpert.com revealed that many people would be left facing financial disaster if they lost their job.

The price comparison site found that under a third of people with loan repayments to meet have payments protection insurance.
