M&S Money: Homeowners should be careful of Christmas criminals

M&S Money has warned homeowners to be especially careful of criminals in the build-up to Christmas, as they may be tempted by the presents left out under the tree.
The home insurance provider said that statistics reveal an increase in burglaries over the darkest months of the year and warned that the extra value added to home by presents may prove to be irresistible to criminals.
According to M&S Money, 39 per cent of families put their presents out under the tree well before the big day, where they could be seen by potential burglars.
Judith Roberts, M&S Money's insurance manager, said: "At Christmas it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the season and forget about home security.
"However, we all know there are criminals who see this time of the year as providing them with rich pickings."
Abbey Home Insurance recently released a study which suggested that the recession may cause the number of domestic break-ins to rise further.
