ONS releases "worrying" unemployment figures

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) released unemployment figures today which one organisation described as "worrying".

Over the last quarter, the figures show that nearly 115,000 people have lost their jobs, meaning that nearly two million people are unemployed.

At the same time, the number of vacancies available fell by nearly 50,000 to just over 550,000.

Analysts from moneysupermarket.com said the figures were "very worrying indeed".

The website's spokesmen added: "These figures will really hit home for those feeling insecure about their job.

"We're all battening down the hatches when it comes to our finances but as redundancy and unemployment levels continue to rise, all the signs are pointing to what could be a grim New Year."

Recent research by insurance providers including LV= and Zurich has revealed that many people do not have the income protection insurance that would allow them to keep paying their mortgages and credit card bills if they lost their job.
