NAEA: Signs of hope amid falling housing market

House prices have continued to fall but the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) says there is a glimmer of hope amongst the gloomy news.

According to the latest statistics released by the industry body, the average price of a semi-detached property fell from £199,905 in October to £192,042 by the end of November, while the average detached property fell in value from £291,592 to £287,922.

However the NAEA said these statistics were not as bad as was predicted and noted that a larger proportion of first-time buyers are getting on the property ladder.

Chris Brown, president of the National Association of Estate Agents, said: "It may seem a meagre offering [but] the glimmer of positive news that some of these figures reveal can give estate agents across the country some hope for a more prosperous 2009."

Recently the government announced proposals to make it harder for mortgage-lenders to repossess homes, which it claimed would ease the financial pressure on homeowners.
