TUC welcomes European working time vote

The Trade Unions Congress (TUC) has welcomed the results of a vote in the European parliament, saying it is Christmas come early for the UK's workers.

According to the TUC, the motion - which means UK workers will not be allowed to work more than 48 hours per week in future - is a welcome victory for workers against a background of rising unemployment.

Brendan Barber, the TUC's general secretary, said: "Members of the European parliament have courageously defied the abusers and the slave-drivers over the loss of the 'right' to work people till they drop."

"MEPs have dealt Scrooge employers a big blow, and the long hours culture will now become part of Christmas past."

The motion, to scrap the UK employers' ability to opt out from the European working time directive, was passed by an absolute majority of 421 votes to 273, with several Labour members going against Gordon Brown's government.
