Extra mortgage lender fees "unjust", say experts

Experts from moneysupermarket.com have spoken out against the extra fees that some mortgage lenders charge customers for their services, labelling them "unjust".

According to the website, homeowners can still be left paying "hefty" charges to some mortgage lenders for going into arrears despite the current economic crisis.

The site's analysts said: "Of all the charges, the extra fee - sometimes up to £100 - for debt counselling seems most unfair.

"For lenders to take advantage of their most vulnerable customers who have approached them for help to get a grip on their finances is unacceptable."

Moneysupermarket.com said that many customers are unaware that they may be charged for every call mortgage lenders make to them and every letter they send.

Last month Gordon Brown called for mortgage lenders to behave "responsibly" and recently the government proposed legislation which would make it harder for mortgage lenders to repossess people's homes.
