NatWest mortgage withdrawal 'leaves couple facing bankruptcy'

A couple has been left potentially facing bankruptcy following the sudden withdrawal of their mortgage by NatWest.

Marian and Peter Addyman, of St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex, had their £226,000 mortgage withdrawn in September, despite the fact that it had been granted just seven months before, according to consumer website Which?.

The couple, who have three children, claim they have never missed a mortgage payment and have asked the consumer watchdog website, Citizens Advice and even their MP for help.

However, despite protestations from all three parties as well as the Addymans themselves, Which? said that NatWest has yet to offer any explanation for its move, which could see the Addymans' house being repossessed.

Marian Addyman said: "We just want to know what prompted NatWest to do this to us. We are trying to get another mortgage, but these days it's so difficult and so far we have not been able to. Banks shouldn't be allowed to treat people like this."

Recently, the government proposed measures that will make it more difficult for mortgage-lenders to repossess houses.
