Credit card spending down in November, says BBA

According to the British Banking Association, (BBA), the amount Brits spent on their credit cards decreased in November compared with the previous month.

The banking industry’s representative body found that after taking seasonal alterations into consideration, people in the UK spent £6.9 billion on their credit cards in November, compared to £7.1 billion in October.

According to the BBA, this figure is also below the average for the previous six months, which is £7.2 billion.

People in the UK bought a total of 101.3 million items on their credit cards in November compared with 102 million the month before and a six-month average of 103 million.

An expert from moneysupermarket.com recently predicted that credit card providers would become increasingly reluctant to grant new cards to customers as the recession bites.

Peter Harrison, head of credit cards for the website, said that those with excellent credit card histories would be most likely to be granted new credit cards.
