Shoppers switch to cheaper supermarkets, says uSwitch.com

A survey by price comparison website uSwitch.com has shown that nearly half of UK shoppers have switched to cheaper supermarkets this year in an attempt to save money during the credit crunch.

The so-called Aldi effect has seen nearly 22 million people in the UK change their habits and buy more of their groceries at budget supermarkets.

According to the poll, around 18 million people said they are no longer buying luxuries as part of their weekly shop.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said: "Our research shows that consumers are prepared to make sacrifices to cut costs - including shopping at a budget supermarket."

Recently a survey released by Halifax found that one area people are not cutting down their spending is Christmas presents for their loved ones.

Only one-fifth of those polled said they had changed their Christmas spending habits because of the credit crunch.
