Expert advises people to reconsider their pension funds

A financial services analyst has advised people in the UK to have a close look at their pension plans as he claims the state pension provides little more than a safety net.

David Kuo, head of personal finance at money website Fool.co.uk, said that while the state pension still provides an essential safety net for many people, falling house prices could leave many people with their major assets seriously reduced in value.

This could leave many people approaching retirement with less than they expected to survive on in their old age.

Mr Kuo added: "Putting aside as little as £7 a day can mean that you get to decide at what income you will retire on rather than letting the state dictate what you should get.

"It's more than an issue of jam today versus jam tomorrow. It's a case of deciding whether you want jam in your retirement or bread and dripping."

Recent research by the Association of British Insurers suggested that many Brits will be making new year’s resolutions to save more money.
