Saga Insurance launches new airline failure cover

Saga Insurance has announced the introduction of airline failure cover as a standard feature in its travel insurance packages.

The insurer, which specialises in providing cover for over 50s, said that the series of high-profile airline bankruptcies provoked by the credit crunch may mean that travellers are more at risk of losing out because of airline collapses than before.

According to Saga Insurance, people who book their flights independently are most at risk of airline failure as most package tour operators provide cover as part of the package.

Paul Green, head of communications at Saga Group, said: "In today's uncertain economic climate the savvy independent traveller needs to check if their insurance covers airline failure if they want to travel with confidence in 2009."

Airlines that have folded in recent months include XL Airways, SilverJet and the Hawaiian carrier Aloha Airlines and several other carriers are thought to be in dire financial straights.
