Skipton Building Society: Brits copy shopping habits from their parents

The single largest influence on Britons' shopping habits is their parents, according to research released recently by Skipton Building Society.

As shoppers in the UK hit the January sales, the Building Society conducted a survey which shows that more than four in ten Brits spend out similar amounts of cash as their parents have done and splurge on luxuries similar to their mothers and fathers.

Nearly one-quarter of people said they had inherited their shopping habits from their mother.

One woman told Skipton Building Society: "I think it got half my spending gene from my father and half from my mum.

"My mum is […] spontaneous and I think I have her 'I need cheering up' attitude to spending."

However Dr Liz Mitchell from Consultant Clinical Psychologist on Harley Street, said she doubted that spending was dictated by genetics.

She added: "It is more likely that we develop our habits through modelling parental behaviours."

Halifax recently conducted a survey which showed that more people will be hitting the January sales this year than in 2007.
